Appointment of Senators: Paul Biya ignores Fru Ndi’s SDF Proposed List

Paul Biya
President Paul Biya on Wednesday May 8, 2013 appointed 30 substantive senators and their alternates to complete 100-member senate of Cameroon.
Contrary to public opinion that the ageing president was going to appoint his son; Frank Emmanuel Biya into the Upper House of Parliament in Cameroon, the president has rather preferred old guards.
Ni John Fru Ndi, chairman of the leading opposition party, the SDF after the proclamation of the official results of the election of senators said he won’t accept any appointment by Mr Biya. But Fru Ndi told journalists that has sent a list of proposed SDF militants to the Head of State for appointment.
The Head of state has reportedly ignored the SDF Chieftain’s proposed list as no SDF militant has been appointed amongst the 30 senators.
More than 70 percent of the 30 appointed senators are from the ruling CPDM party of President Paul Biya.
He has also appointed senators from the National Union for Democracy and Progress, the NUDP of Minister Bello Bouba Maigari and from the Cameroon National Salvation Front, CNSF of Communication Minister, Issa Tchiroma Bakary. The duo are however of the presidential majority.
The appointments came barely nine days following the proclamation of the April 14 first ever senatorial election in Cameroon; an election in which president Biya’s ruling CPDM party grasped 56 of the 70 elected senators.
